Found this in one of the (many) un-built subdivision lots around here. This is near my office and used to be a farm. Now, surrounded by a brand-new road, shiny street signs, bulldozed trees and a new forest of lot markers.
Part of me is surprised that nobody has taken this. (Maybe nobody noticed?) And part of me is sad that I have that reaction. Even more, I think there's a sadness about a forgotten bit of farm equipment in the midst of a lot that won't be built soon. The farmer gone, the builders out of work, a treasure in the tumbleweed.
I used a move from Seth and applied a gradient to the top of this one. I think it helps -- anyone think it's too obvious?
Don’t Wait for Inspiration

Well of course I post before you do: my midnight deadline comes several hours earlier than yours thanks to the difference in time zones! Which means I get home from work several hours before you too.)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, whatever quality I achieve is inspired out of a desire to chase your progress! You've got a fantastic eye, and I'm so thankful you took on this challenge. It's really made it more fun to have each others accompaniment and I've been learning so much more.
Started following Batman's blog as well... a coworker? He looks like he started shutter-blogging about the same time as we did.
Also... I meant to say that the gradient was a nice touch to this picture. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that most of my editing so far has been in Picasa. I have Photoshop, but it requires an additional step to process from RAW to edit them, and many of the small tweaks I've done were easily picked up in Picasa. One of the downsides to adding gradient that way though is that it applies it to everything, both the background as well as the foreground/subject. So your straw stalks turned a little blue, for better or worse. It still adds considerable value to this picture because of the sky blue highlights on the metal bows. Definitely a good move.
ReplyDeleteI love the color on this one. Can you add info on what lenses you are using??
ReplyDeleteThis would have been the 17-40L. Racked to one end, apparently. I had to look at the EXIF data on Flickr to remember. That's one of the reasons I don't always write the lens down, because the focal length is saved. In other words, if I didn't use a lens for a specific reason other than focal length, I don't usually add that to the description. If it's useful, I'm happy to add.
ReplyDeleteI'll admit to also using Picasa for any effects I add after post-processing, for these photo-a-day shots. I'm using this blog/challenge as a platform for my photo skills, and not so much for photo retouching. I also use Picasa for a one-step blog/upload of my private family blog.
