A family member started chemotherapy this week, and she decided to get a head-start on her new hairdo. It's strange how much a part of our image our hair is, but how it's really not that big a part of who we are. As I told my daughter while she watched, the hair is just the part on top, but even with a different haircut, we're still the same person in the ways in which it counts. There's something beautiful and powerful about shedding a part of us that provides our public identity.
